The Campbells are one of the largest and most historically significant clans in Scotland, with their lands centred around Argyll and Loch Awe.

The Modern Campbell tartan is famous for its iconic design and also commonly goes by the name of "Black watch"

The tartan features a symmetrical design with dark navy & forest green with black accents. The tartan is very versatile due to its simple colour palette, it can be styled for any season or type of event.

It has become one of the most recognized tartans worldwide and is commonly seen in formalwear, kilts, and even fashion collections.

Tartan Variations-

Like many clan tartans this tartan went on to have many variations, Black watch has its own variations too even though Modern Campbell & Black watch are the same in design. Clan members would traditionally wear the Campbell tartan as form of unity with their clan and was used as a means of identification between clans.

The "Black Watch" is seen as a more universal tartan after its original use as It was originally worn by members of the Black Watch Regiment (the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment), which was formed to police the Scottish Highlands after the Jacobite uprisings. It is still highly used in military kilts.

Tartan Clan History-

The origin of this clan is linked with the Strathclyde area of Scotland. The earliest recording of the family was in 1263 by a man named Gillespie. The Campbells were under the control of the MacDougalls who had killed a Campbell chief in 1296.

There faith was restored by Robert the Bruce who was to give Sir Neil Campbell grants of land. Sir Neil was also given the Kings sister in marriage, a child was then born who was to be known as the Earl of Atholl. Although fate had it that John died in a battle in 1333 and left no heir so the lands were to be given away yet again.

The Campbells were sure to show the royals support in the fifteenth century and thus allowed the Campbells to be more powerful when the Crown broke the Lordship of the Isles leaving the Campbells to be the most powerful in this part of the land. This loyalty, combined with their strategic marriages and land acquisitions, made them one of the most influential clans in Scotland.

The family continued to prosper and became powerful throughout the world with the revolution in 1688 gaining them more power.

There are now fifteen Campbell families around the world and Inverary Castle still holds as a meeting place, the family home for many years.

The crest is a boar's head fessways erased Or, armed Argent, langued Gules. The motto is Ne obliviscaris meaning 'Do not forget'

Many members of Clan Campbell served in the Black Watch Regiment, hence why the Campbell tartan and Black watch were used so interchangeably.
